i will teach you to be rich
My role
I was engaged as a freelancer to edit email campaigns for I Will Teach You to Be Rich (IWT), a brand by New York Times best selling author Ramit Sethi.
The project
Every week, the IWT team sent me a week’s worth of emails written by a copywriter, from Ramit’s perspective. My job was to polish the content against a 35-point checklist related to subject lines, headings, content, appearance, voice and brand, and technical guidelines.
Timeline
Same-day to 1-week turnaround
My approach
Ramit’s voice is distinct. He’s your buddy at the bar, he writes with swagger, but he’s also kind and empathetic. To succeed in this role, I knew that Ramit’s voice had to become second nature to me.
As soon as I was hired, I studied IWT’s brand voice guide and 35-point checklist in depth, read what he had been posting on social media for the past six months, listened to his latest podcast episodes, and read his book.
These emails sold Ramit’s courses. The courses all follow a similar structure, so I registered for one—Call to Action—to see exactly what customers got when they bought a seat. That helped me make sure all the copy was accurate and had pizzazz without overpromising anything.
When the copy was thin or misaligned, I rewrote it. I also pulled in GIFs, images from Ramit’s social profiles, and shocking quotes from his podcast to strengthen the emails.
What I delivered
More than 50 email campaigns in a year, plus feedback to help develop newer writers on the roster.
